President’s Message

This year’s crawfish boil was held for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. This event was well attended by our members and their guests. Also, some of the members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry attended, as they were partaking in a conference during the same weekend. I applaud Dr. Jeffry A. Leeson for all of his efforts in putting the event together. All of the expenses of the event were covered by sponsorship from Robert Ellis & Associates, Patterson Dental, VOCO America and New Orleans Dental Enterprises, Inc. (NODE President, Dr. Kevin J. Collins agreed to pay any remaining expenses not covered by the other sponsors.)
On May 21st, our general membership meeting was held at Dooky Chase Restaurant in New Orleans. Our meeting was hosted by the one and only Mrs. Leah Chase. Mrs. Chase was recently presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Tulane University. Mrs. Chase graciously took the time to greet all guests and share her unique humor. Approximately 65 members and guests were in attendance as Mrs. Chase expressed her appreciation of NODA members. All seemed to enjoy the buffet meal which she personally selected, as well as the ambiance. Our meeting was sponsored by Zila Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
There are no general membership meetings scheduled during the summer months and our next meeting will be held in September. Please see Dr. Leeson’s article for details on all upcoming meetings and visit the association’s website at www.nodental.org.
I encourage all members to log on to the LDA’s website and support the water fluoridation initiative. This very important legislation needs your support so please ask your local representatives to support this bill.
The 2009 New Orleans Dental Conference/LDA Annual Session committee, chaired by Dr. David J. Hildebrandt, continue to be hard at work preparing for next year’s meeting. Please contact NODA with suggestions on speakers, along with their contact information. Also, please feel to contact the office to volunteer your time.
I will be spending the summer reaching out to local school system, charters schools, private schools and the Recovery School District, stressing the importance of early childhood exams. I will be encouraging the implementation of mandatory annual dental exams for children in grades K thru 12 as requirement for promotion. I will keep the membership informed of the progress of these efforts. As always, your input and assistance is needed and welcome.
