Welcome to the New Orleans Dental Association of the State of Louisiana! The New Orleans Dental Association (NODA) is a local component of the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) and the American Dental Association (ADA).  NODA includes the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemine, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Tammany (that portion east of Bayou Lacombe).

NODA is a voluntary membership organization whose mission is to establish and maintain a cohesive organization that serves its membership by promoting the art, science, and professionalism of dentistry and by communicating the value of oral health to the community.

NODA supports members in achieving and maintaining high standards of professionalism and leadership within dentistry and our community through locally-based continuing education programs, monthly general membership meetings, involvement in state and national legislative venues.  Through local resources and our partnership with the LDA and ADA, a wide variety of programs and information have been designed to assist members in creating and sustaining successful practices...

SPEAKER - Elizabeth Strother, Librarian/Professor
Ms. Strother has been head of the dental school library for over 30 years.  She is the author of 18 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including four on the history of dentistry.  She is course director of the first-year dental course, Introduction to Evidence-Based Dentistry (formerly Dental Information Management Skills).  She is an honorary member and past-president of OKU and currently a member of the dental school Admissions and Curriculum Committees, and secretary of the Faculty Assembly.  She is also coordinator of the VitalSource digital textbook program for dental students.

TOPIC OF PRESENTATION - “The Evolution of Dentistry”
The lecture presents the highlights of the history of dentistry, from ancient times to the 21st century. The history of dental schools in Louisiana, Dr. C. Edmund Kells, and the LSUSD collection of antique dental artifacts are also discussed. 

The objectives of this lecture are to familiarize dentists with:

1)     Dental treatment in ancient cultures.

2)     The progression of dentistry from a trade to a profession.

3)     The major figures who contributed to the advancement of dental knowledge and skills.

4)     Louisiana history including the five dental schools and Dr. C. Edmund Kells.

5)     The collection of antique dental instruments and equipment in the LSUSD library.
